THE PHONE RANG.
“Dr. Jourdan’s office,” I said.
“I can’t stand these spasms . . . I mean headaches.” This slip of the tongue confused Langston so much he just hung up without continuing.
Then he called back a few minutes later, as if it had never happened.
“Dr. Jourdan’s office.”
“This is Langston Stuffel. I got my headaches again. Do you reckon he could give me something for it?”
“What do you think would help you?” I asked, toying with him.
“Oh, I don’t know. Whatever he thinks.”
“I can’t remember what he gave you last time. Was it . . . ah . . . What was it?”
“I think it started with a D or something like that . . .”
“D . . . Was it Deltasone?”
“Noooo.”
“Was it Diabenese?”
“Nooo.”
“Was it Demulen?”
“I think it might have been something like Darvon or Darvocet or something like that.”
“No,” I said, “that doesn’t sound right. Could it have been . . .?”
“No it was Darvocet. It’s coming back to me now. I’m pretty sure it was Darvocets.”
“Well, okay, if you think that’s what it was, I’ll ask. Are you sure?”
“Yeah. Bye.”
I hung up and dialed Frank.
“Frank, it’s Carolyn, would you check the computer and let me know what kind of narcotics prescriptions Langston Stuffel’s showing up with lately?”
“Sure. Let me see . . . uh, oh, . . . Langston’s been busy. He’s got Darvon from you, Lorcet from Dr. Andrews on 1/3, 2/10, 4/15, Percocet from Dr. Brandon on 6/2, 6/23, 7/20 . . .”
“That’s about what I figured,” I said. “You know he’s trying to go for disability on his back now?”
“Well shit, he’ll probably get it too,” Frank said. “You know I broke my back years ago and it still hurts when I’ve been standing for a long time, but I’d never get a damn dime! I’m lucky to get time to take an aspirin.”
